The first DIAF, originally named "Dashanzi International Art Festival", was held in 2004. Its first purpose was to provide a platform for contemporary artistic life in Beijing: the 798 zone in Dashanzi District. The project has met with great success so far. Moreover, the Dashanzi industrial area has been recognized as a protected Bauhaus industrial architecture landmark as well as a contemporary art district with a worldwide reputation.
