At the end of the 1970s, Mr. Wang Binglong began to experiment
with a new art form. He took Chinese opera off the stage, and placed
the actors in the midst of nature, photographing them in the traditional
format of mass-produced New Year's calendar paintings. Mr. Wang Binglong's
photography was not just an expression of the popular New Year's
paintings, but also a creation of deep visuality. The mastery of
the works' invented elements and the exploration of an image's strength
provided a valuable reference point for contemporary photography.
As an organization that explores, arranges, and researches Chinese
contemporary photography, the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre
is pleased to present Mr. Wang Binglong's solo show "1979-1989: Chinese Opera Calendar Photography." The exhibition is an opportunity for
contemporary eyes to examine this unique photographic creation from
twenty years before and make an inquiry into its value and contribution
to contemporary Chinese photography.
