"Light.Sound / Time" (Guangyin / Guangyin) focused on the relationship between the audio and the visual, and explored the ongoing dialogue between past, present and future.

During 4 weeks in April and May 2004, the first DIAF organized and co-produced more than 30 events, including visual arts exhibitions, dance and music performances, sounds installations, film screenings. About 40 artists and smaller autonomous spaces working in the district took part in the festival by opening their doors to the public and organizing special events.

4 film festivals: including a retrospective featuring the prominent French director Chris Marker whose work was shown for the first time in China , a projection of independent Japanese films, an Asian-French video festival and the hosting of a series of documentaries from Australia .

9 visual art exhibitions: an open air light installation by Wang Shugang, and photography, painting, multi-media as the the Chinese premiere of Transborder Language 2004 ¨C Volume Control, exploring the meaning of sound in a visual manner.

2 architecture and design exhibitions: Modern Style in Asia gathered designers and artists from Japan and China , while Imagination and Reality were deemed the issue of future developments of the Dashanzi Art District , through projects of CAFA ( China ) and SCI-Arc (US).

3 dance and multimedia performances: these were premiere features in Dashanzi Art District that all attracted large audiences. Time and Space, the workshop and the live performance by Wu Wenguang, Wen Hui and their guests from the UK , gave viewers the opportunity to follow their creative process.

Numerous national and international music festivals: experimental concerts featuring Wang Lei, open-air sound art installations, DJ sets and live concerts of international musicians such as Venicio Capossela. Yan Jun, prolific composer, critic and organizer of live music manifestations hosted many events.

The exhibitions and events featured the work of more than 100 artists from 11 countries. 40 foreign participants were invited: some of them had already taken part in major events such as the Venice Biennale (Fujimoto Yukio and Marco Nereo Rotelli), while some others, such as Australian Ian Mott and Chinese He Yunchang, had the opportunity to reach a larger audience.
