Dashanzi Art District is located in Dashanzi, in the northeast of Beijing, also known as 798, after the number of one of the original factories. The original factory buildings were a large scale model factory, designed in the 1950s by East Germany. Since 2001, the area has attracted a large quantity of artists, cultural figures and organisations, that have set up galleries, artist studios, an art bookstore, coffee shops, and various other initiatives, with now around 200 art organizations in the area. Dashanzi Art District is representative of innovative contemporary art and it is one of the most active art initiatives in Beijing.

Annually, the Dashanzi International Art Festival takes place in spring at Dashanzi, taking the development of this region to new heights.The art festival acts as a platform for communication and cooperation between artists of different nationalities and backgrounds, simultaneously providing an infinite vast work space for them. The festival enables the colorful magic of contemporary art to emerge in the public.
